The DTMI supports pilot funding opportunities for several initiatives, including, for example, the Translational Research Pilot Projects, Biostatistical Methodology Research, Early Phase Research (DCRU), and Community-Bbsed Research in Durham County projects.

DTRI Pilot Program


Purpose

The DTRI supports innovative translational projects focused upon the invention, preclinical development and/or first in man studies of novel therapeutic agents, biomedical devices and diagnostics designed to address unmet clinical needs.

Award Amount

Awards will be for 6-8 collaborative agreements for $25k-$100k each in 2009-2010.

Funding cycles begin in July and end in June of the following year.




Voucher for Specialty Core Services


Purpose

The DTRI supports specialty cores that provide services to Duke investigators. Eligible Core Services:

BioBanking, Duke Image Analysis Laboratory, Genotyping and Sequencing, Immune Monitoring Laboratory, Metabolomics, Optical Molecular Imaging, Proteomics

Award Amount

Up to $10K for 6 months.

Exceptional requests are considered for up to $25K for 12 months.

Proposals will be accepted on a continual basis with quarterly reviews.

Biostatistical Methodology


Purpose

The DTMI has funds available through the CTSA grant to support research projects in biostatistical methodology applicable to clinical and translational science. Applications relevant to either of the major translational blocks, Bench to Bedside or Trials to Populations, are especially welcome.

Award Amount

Awards will be for two years. Individual awards per year will be $35K. Joint applications will be allowed a maximum of $35K per year per individual; the amount for successful joint applications may vary.

Application Process

The entire proposal* should be no longer than five pages (11-pt Arial/Helvetica font). For joint proposals involving more than one faculty member a maximum of eight pages may be submitted.

Attach the PI’s current CV and submit with the application in electronic format to dawn.hails@duke.edu.

Dates

The deadline for the receipt of applications is May 1, 2009.

Awards are anticipated to start on August 1, 2009.




Duke Clinical Research Unit (DCRU) Research


Purpose

The Duke Clinical Research Unit (DCRU) is a Duke resource available to investigators for the conduct of clinical trials in either adult or pediatric populations.

Award Amount

Awards will consist of access to the DCRU facilities and nursing services, plus additional funding between $500 and $10,000.

The Principal Investigator must prepare and submit the application to DCRU_Study_Mail@duke.edu.

Awards will be made until all of the allocated funds are obligated.

Community-based Research in Durham


Purpose

Duke Medicine is committed to working with the people of Durham County to improve the health of all residents in the County.

Award Amount

Up to $100K for 8 months.

Ten awards are anticipated.

Application Process

There are two stages: (1) Duke-Durham Teams submit a brief proposal describing their team, the issue to be addressed, and how to address it.

If invited, (2) the finalist Duke-Durham Teams submit a full proposal, line-item budget and budget narrative to create a plan for an innovative model of care/services.

MURDOCK Biomarkers


Purpose

The purpose of these projects that represent the second wave of research sponsored in Horizon 1 of the Murdock study are to reclassify health and disease through the integrated analysis of multiple Omics-scale technologies (genomics, proteomics, metabolomics) and clinical data across multiple disease states.

Award Amount

$2M available to fund 4-6 projects.

MURDOCK Biostatistics


Purpose

The DTRI has funds available to support research projects in biostatistics / bioinformatics methodology. This study involves the integrated analysis of multiple Omics-scale technologies and electronic health records, across multiple subject cohorts.

Award Amount

$40-$75K for 18-24 months
