DTMI Annual Report

Up one level Last modified November 06, 2009 02:34 PM - EST

The purpose of this report is to recognize the exceptional work in disease research and healthcare improvement being conducted at Duke; to pay tribute to the transformative work of our researchers, research teams, and supporting academic structures; and to salute the energy of our community members as they bring new ways of thinking to the task of translating scientific knowledge into better health for all.

DTMI Annual Report - Cover artThe Duke Translational Medicine Institute (DTMI) was established in October of 2006 with an award from the National Institutes of Health (NIH), together with tremendous institutional support from Duke University. Our mandate—to transform clinical and translational research at Duke—was part of a sweeping national effort to encourage faster, more efficient translation of new scientific discoveries into clinical practice, promote measurable improvements in community health, and make “personalized” medicine a reality. This grant from the NIH, one of a number of Clinical and Translational Science Awards (CTSA), was designed to allow us the freedom to take a fresh look at these complex enterprises and to develop new ways of organizing translational research so that society can reap the greatest possible benefit from the work of our researchers.

Each of the stories in this report represents not only an advance in research, but also showcases innovative approaches to the way research is done.

With another year behind us, we believe the days ahead hold even greater promise. As we reflect on the outstanding accomplishments of this new organization, it is exciting to see the groundbreaking developments in our quest to transform the landscape of clinical and translational research.
