Welcome to the Duke Clinical Research Institute
Up one levelThe second and most established pillar of the DTMI, the Duke Clinical Research Institute (DCRI) has transformed clinical research on the Duke campus and provides insight into how the entire clinical and translational research enterprise will be configured to meet the goals of the DTMI.
Science is becoming more interdisciplinary. According to DCRI Director Dr. Robert Harrington, researchers must move out of the traditional silos of departments and divisions and think more along the lines of projects. The DTMI umbrella organization allows faculty to come together from different domains to try to solve particular problems, yet have a common set of resources and support. It helps us see that we all belong to the bigger whole.
While the DCRI has a global mission, its roots are in our local community. The DCRI began as a cardiovascular databank of Duke patients to improve the care of Duke patients. The DCRI quickly became a group known for publishing its own information so that others outside of Duke could use it.
All research is local -- what we learn at the local level can be applied globally, and what we learn globally can translate to the local level.
The DCRI specializes in coordinating multi-site clinical research trials, but in almost every case, Duke is one of the sites. We believe it is important for our faculty to be involved in the trials, and to rapidly adopt the information that we learn back into our own practices. That integration between the multi-center clinical trials and our own local practices is a unique part of DCRI. So, what we learn is shared with the Duke Center for Community Research (DCCR), which is focused on clinical research in our local community.

Harrington received his undergraduate degree in English from the College of the Holy Cross, Worcester, MA . He attended Dartmouth Medical School and received his medical degree from Tufts University School of Medicine in 1986. He was an intern, resident, and the chief medical resident in internal medicine at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center. Harrington's clinical and research interests are interventional cardiology, ischemic heart disease, acute coronary care, and cardiovascular clinical trial methods. He is currently leading the Clinical Trials Network Best Practices (CTN-BP) project which is one of the network initiatives for the NIH Roadmap. |
